Biothermal Engineering Laboratory

Bioengineering is a field that addresses problems in medicine and biology from an engineering perspective and develops solutions based on engineering principles. The Biothermal Engineering Laboratory conducts research in bioengineering, thermal engineering, and their interdisciplinary field, biothermal engineering.

Our current research interests focus on the following topics

-Biothermal engineering studies on electrical effects on cells and their application to minimally invasive cancer therapies
-Biomechanics of skeletal tissues such as tendons, bones, and cartilage
-Mechanical stimuli and mechanobiological responses in three-dimensional cellular aggregates (spheroids and organoids)
-Development and open-source design of educational biological tools and bio-experimental equipment
Although many of our studies relate to cells and medical applications, the fundamental approach is rooted in mechanical engineering, including thermal engineering. We emphasize engineering perspectives and methodologies derived from mechanical engineering.

The Main Research Topics

Mechanisms of cell division inhibition induced by weak alternating electric fields (tumor-treating fields)
Non-thermal cell ablation technologies using high-voltage pulsed electric fields (irreversible electroporation)
Mechanical stimulation control and mechanobiological responses in three-dimensional cellular aggregates (spheroids and organoids)
Development and open-source dissemination of bioengineering tools based on the concept of “frugal science”
