Organizational Structure of the Undergraduate Program

The School of Engineering at Kyushu University is composed of twelve departments and six groups based on foundational subjects. From enrollment until the first half of their second year, students belong to a group, after which they are assigned to a department.

Departments and Groups

List of Groups in the School of Engineering

Students admitted through the General Selection (First and Second Periods) are affiliated with one of the departmental groups (Groups I–VI) from enrollment until the end of the first semester of their second year.
At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are assigned to the department based on their preferences and academic performance.

Group I

Students complete common engineering education in the first year and electrical and information engineering education in the first semester of the second year. Departmental assignment to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science takes place at the end of the first semester of the second year.

Group II

In the first year, students study School of Engineering–wide common courses, and in the first semester of the second year, they study materials-related common courses. At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are assigned to one of the following departments based on their preferences and academic performance: the Department of Materials, the Department of Applied Chemistry, the Department of Chemical Engineering, or the Molecular and Material Engineering Course in the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering.

Group III

In the first year, students study School of Engineering–wide common courses, and in the first semester of the second year, they study mechanical engineering–related common courses.
At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are assigned to one of the following departments based on their preferences and academic performance: the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Course in the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, or the Department of Applied Quantum Physics and Nuclear Engineering.

Group IV

In the first year, students study School of Engineering–wide common courses, and in the first semester of the second year, they study interdisciplinary engineering–related common courses.
At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are assigned to one of the following departments based on their preferences and academic performance: the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, the Department of Earth Resources Engineering, or the Department of Civil Engineering.

Group V

In the first year, students study School of Engineering–wide common courses, and in the first semester of the second year, they study architecture-related courses.
At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are assigned to the Department of Architecture.

Group VI

In the first year, students study School of Engineering–wide common courses.
At the end of the first year, students are assigned to one of Groups I through V based on their preferences and academic performance.
